Which range to use

The 10-meter range is the place for close-in work: new shooters, defensive-pistol drills at realistic distances, and checking a new carry gun. Its 30 positions shoot at 10 meters or 50 feet.

The 42-position range sets targets at 25 or 50 meters, the distances for bullseye practice and for stretching out a full-size pistol or revolver. If you're shooting a rifle-caliber handgun, you'll be sent to positions 41 or 42.

Target rules

Targets need the range master's approval. Targets with human features and zombie targets aren't allowed, but training silhouettes are. Hang paper targets with tape rather than staples or thumbtacks.

Safety and the two-strike rule

Every line is supervised by range safety officers, so follow their commands for cease-fires and target changes. Hitting the target frames or the overhead baffles earns a warning; a second violation ends your rifle and handgun shooting for the day, and you'll need to complete a basic marksmanship training class before you can come back to those ranges.

Tips

Bring more targets than you think you'll need; target changes happen on the range officers' schedule. Carry your firearm cased and unloaded from the car to the line. Weekday mornings on Monday, Thursday and Friday are usually the quietest times. Call 561-512-0285 about age rules before bringing young shooters.
