American and International Skeet

Nine automated skeet fields fill the middle of the clay target center. Four of them double as American trap fields and five as International trap fields, so the layout switches with demand.

American skeet

Skeet throws crossing targets from a high house and a low house while you move around eight stations, seven on a semicircle and one in the middle. It's a great way to learn leads on crossing birds before dove season. Any gauge that holds two shells works; the preferred load is #9 shot, and nothing larger than #7½ is allowed. Bring a box of 25 shells per round.

International skeet

The Olympic version is harder: faster targets, a variable delay of up to three seconds after you call, and a low gun until the target appears. For practice rounds any 12-gauge #7½ or smaller load is fine. Competition rounds must use 24-gram loads of #9 shot (pellets no larger than 2.6 mm) in a standard 2¾-inch, 3¼-dram-equivalent shell.

Tips

New to skeet? Book Learn to Shoot Skeet before your first full round. Shoot with a group of up to five for the classic squad rotation. Ask the store about trapper availability on busy weekends. Wear eye and ear protection at all times on the fields.
