American trap

In American trap, targets fly away from a single trap house at varying angles while a squad of five rotates through five stations. The fields here are automated, so a squad can run its own rounds. Use a 12- or 20-gauge shotgun and #7½ or #8 shot, and bring one box of 25 shells for each round.

International (bunker) trap

International trap is the Olympic version: targets come out of a trench of machines much faster and at wider angles, and you get two shots at each. Any gauge that holds two shells is allowed, but you'll need at least one box of 12-gauge shells per round. For casual rounds any 12-gauge #7½ or smaller load is fine. Competition rounds must use 24-gram loads (#7½ shot no larger than 2.6 mm), the standard 2¾-inch, 3¼-dram-equivalent shell.

Getting started

If you've never shot trap, book Learn to Shoot Trap. For $25 you get instruction, the gun and gear, and an abbreviated round. Call 561-822-6823 to reserve. After that, a rental shotgun is $20 for the day, and the store sells eye and ear protection.

Tips

Get a Clay Card on your first visit; it pays for every clay discipline here. Load $100 at once if you shoot often, for the 10% bonus. Four of the five bunker fields have covered firing lines, which helps on hot or rainy afternoons. Pick up your empty hulls and leave the station clean for the next squad.
